With idyllic shores that look out on crystal clear waters and incredible landscapes, this tiny two-island nation presents its full charm.

Whether you are craving a soul searching tropical beach getaway, an adventurous hike by a volcano crater or a curious snorkeling session through the reef, St Kitts and Nevis have it all.

But this fascinating island nation in the West Indies had its dose of troubled past...

Like many islands in the Caribbean, it's history is checked with the slave trade.

When Europeans first began to settle in the early 1600s the nation was split between England and France, becoming the first European settlement in the Caribbean, and the most profitable sugar and tobacco plantation thanks to its rich and fertile land.

Today St Kitts and Nevis are known for their beautiful beaches, evergreen tropical forests, lovely and friendly locals. It's said that the nation is so fertile that even the local monkeys are green!

Since 1983 when the nation gained full independence from England, ceremonies are held across the two islands.

The main celebrations are in the capital Basseterre, where a Community Festival takes place over two days.

The streets are filled with a Carnival atmosphere with music, calypso shows, and parades of dancers in colourful costumes.

The flag, and what it represents:

• A green triangle to represent the fertility of the island
• A red triangle to represent the years of struggle against slavery and colonialism
• A black stripe representing the African heritage of the people
• Yellow borders to represent the bright sunshine of the island
• Two white stars, one for each island as a symbol of hope and liberty
