We’re continuing to share stories of incredible talent through our series, What We’re Made Of. This series highlights trailblazers in our communities and celebrates their achievements, showcasing some truly inspiring individuals.
We’re thrilled to present a collaboration with the legendary Norman Jay MBE—one of the most influential figures in UK music and a pioneer of the Good Times sound system.
Of course, no conversation about Norman would be complete without recognising his iconic connection to Notting Hill Carnival. For decades, Norman’s Good Times sound system has been a cornerstone of the festival, captivating crowds with its infectious energy and eclectic sounds. His sets have become legendary, transforming the streets of Notting Hill into a joyous celebration of music, culture, and unity. He takes us back to where it all began and how they expanded.
Norman takes us on a walk beginning at Ladbrook Grove station, through his old neighbourhood, sharing stories from his life, the roots of his career, and the vibrant community that shaped him. From the early days of spinning vinyl to becoming a global ambassador for soul, funk, and reggae, Norman’s journey is as inspiring as the music he’s known for.
Norman talks memories, being one of the first to break the boundaries of traditional reggae, revisits his favourite record shop, Honest Jon's, and heads into Turtle Bay Hammersmith with his son, Russ Jay, and his father, Andy, for a taste of our iconic jerk dishes.
This video is a tribute to the power of the neighbourhoods that shape us. It’s a chance to see Norman’s world through his eyes and understand the passion that fuels his iconic sound.
Stay tuned for Part 2, where Norman sits down in our Hammersmith restaurant for an exclusive Q&A!
