Black History Month 2021

Turtle Bay does Black History Month 2021

Black History Month is a celebration of the achievements of people who persevered and prevailed. BHM Is also a time to educate and ensure we keep progressing together whilst respecting and recognising those before us.

Understanding Black history helps us learn how to change our perceptions and do better.

“If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated.” said historian Carter Godwin Woodson, whose work led to the creation of Black History Month.

Unfortunately, in 2021, we still live in a world and a society where young Black men like Bukayo, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho are just one bad performance away from terrible racist abuse. What should have been a celebration, reminded us very quickly of just why celebrating Black History Month is still relevant today. Racism hasn’t gone away and Euro 2020 gave us insight into this.

Thankfully, the outpouring of support for the three young lions in the days and weeks following indicated the type of inclusive and equal society people want to live in. It gave many non-Black people an opportunity to observe the pain and unfairness of racism.

Discussion and education in race and race equality are opportunities to learn and understand. Enabling us to share thoughts, ideas to reach different people from all backgrounds.

This year’s theme was “Proud to Be”. People were encouraged to share what they are proud to be on social media.

We at Turtle Bay wanted to embrace the theme of Black History Month and celebrate the rich culture, food, drink and music of the Caribbean as our inspiration.

One love

The #ProudToBe theme has allowed us to honor our Turtle Bay Teams and inspiration.

We have heard from our Team Members from African Caribbean Heritage sharing what they are Proud to be.
