Large Table 1 30 Curry Goat
A Taste of the Caribbean: Curry Goat

If you’ve never tried curry goat, you’re missing out on one of the Caribbean’s most delicious and flavour-packed dishes!

Arguably one of the most popular dishes in Jamaica and a staple at family gatherings, street food stalls and parties, curry goat is like a warm hug in a bowl - rich, warming and sure to leave you feeling full and happy.

The history of curry goat

Curry goat is a great example of the many cultures that have influenced Caribbean cuisine. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, thousands of people migrated from India to the Caribbean - many indentured servants who worked on the sugar cane plantations after slavery was abolished. They brought new ways of cooking, new ingredients and new dishes, including curries!

What does it taste like?

Unlike your typical curry, this dish offers something truly unique. Goat meat has a really tender texture - a bit like lamb but with more depth.

Of course, our Curry Goat features vibrant blend of fragrant spices like turmeric, coriander and cumin with just a hint of scotch bonnet for a little heat.  We marinade our goat meat before slow cooking it for hours, so it becomes soft and succulent, absorbing all the spices and flavourful goodness.

Is it spicy?

Everyone's spice tolerance is a little bit different, but we would say our Curry Goat has a medium spice level. The scotch bonnet chillis we use are as much about their flavour as they are about their spice, bringing a real sweet, tangy layer to the sauce. Pairing your Curry Goat with some sweet plantain and a refreshing, fruity cocktail will also balance out any spice. A Healthier Protein!

Did you know... goat meat is actually a healthier alternative to other red meats. It is naturally lean, very nutritious and has a range of health benefits. The meat has less fat, less saturated fat and more iron for the same amount of protein when compared to other meats such as beef, lamb, or chicken.

What do you eat it with?

Our Curry Goat is served with our famous coconut rice and peas, but we definitely recommend pairing we a couple of sides for the table. Sweet Plantain makes for the perfect compliment to the rich, savoury sauce with a sweet burst that's great for mopping up the final drops of sauce. We're also huge fans of Festivals, a dough-based dumpling that is popular all over the Caribbean island and perfect for dipping in curries.

And how about a cocktail or 2...?

Of course, we might be biased but we think a refreshing cocktail and hearty Curry Goat is a match made in heaven - especially when it's Happy Hour! If you're looking for a classic Caribbean-inspired combo, you need to try the Reggae Rum Punch alongside your curry! It's an iconic drink that we've had on the Turtle Bay menu since day 1 and equally as likely as curry goat to be found served up at beach bars and big celebrations across the islands.

For something a little more special, it's got to be a Sundowner - our Stir It Up is a balanced and refreshing option for those who fancy something a little less sweet and fruity but still full of tropical flavour.
