Make our favourite Sundowner cocktail in minutes - it’s our take on an Old-Fashioned. We've added some flavoured rum alongside the classic Bourbon for a slightly sweeter and totally tropical drink. It's perfect for a cold winter's day when you're looking for something that'll bring a bit of Caribbean sunshine to your evening. If you’re not keen on a normal old-fashioned or don’t usually enjoy whiskey, you’ve got to give this a try -it’s much lighter and a little sweeter.
This is also a great cocktail to make if you don't have much equipment at home or want something super easy. As the name suggests, it's stirred rather than shaken, so you can build it in the glass and away you go.
A note on stirring
It's not just the name - stirring this cocktail is actually a really important part of the process. It might sound like overkill, stirring for 60 seconds - but trust us, this is important. It allows the ice to melt a little, diluting the strong spirits slightly and melding the flavours together to create a smooth and easily sipped drink.
The recipe
- Take a short glass and add some ice. Ideally, use one really big ice cube if possible, but smaller cubed ice is also fine. We'd recommend about 1/3 of the glass if using smaller cubes.
- Pour over 30ml of bourbon - we use Wild Turkey
- Add 30ml of Cockspur Pineapple rum - this will bring the sweet, tropical flavour.
- Add 1-2tsp of sugar syrup (which you can make easily on the hob by mixing 1 part sugar with 1 part water, or substitute with pre-bought sugar syrup, maple syrup or honey).
- Now stir slowly for 60 seconds.
- If you have some, finish with a dash of bitters and a slice of orange!
Variations
You could also try other flavoured rums if you like to experiment, such as Twin Fin Coconut & Lychee. For a less sweet variation, try mixing in a dark rum like El Dorado 12 or Angostura 1919 rather than a flavoured rum. THis will bring you closer to the classic Old Fashioned flavour - still with a lovely, rummy depth that we definitely think is superior to the original though!
