The Delight of Caribbean Dumplings: Perfectly Crafted for Curry Dipping

If you’ve ever dined with us at Turtle Bay, you know we love dishes that are made for sharing and enjoying together. One of our favourite side dishes that brings this energy to the table our Caribbean dumplings, also known as a festival. These golden, crispy-yet-fluffy dumplings are perfect for scooping up rich Caribbean curries and soaking in all those incredible flavours. But what exactly makes our dumplings so irresistible?

What are Caribbean Dumplings?

Caribbean dumplings, known as festivals, are fried dough delights that are slightly sweet - often with a hint of warmth from spices used in the batter. Unlike the denser dumplings found in some cuisines, festivals are light - meaning there's always room for a dip or two! With a golden crisp on the outside, tear open to reveal the soft, doughy insides. Made from a simple mix of flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and a touch of salt, they’re rolled into small oblong shapes and fried until just right.

Festivals are believed to have originated in Jamaica, however variations of fried dumplings can be found throughout the Caribbean islands, each adding its own twist to this comforting side dish. Their widespread appeal reflects the region's love of simple, satisfying, and flavourful food. The name festivals is believed to come from the sense of joy and celebration that these dumplings bring to any meal – and we can’t help but agree! Whether you’re sharing a plate with friends or indulging solo, they bring an extra touch of fun to the dining experience, and when paired with a warming curry, you'll experience the perfect combo of comfort and joy.

They are also sometimes known as Johnny Cakes - which may come from the name "journey cake", dating back to when enslaved workers would take them on long journeys.

The Perfect Pairing for Caribbean Curries

One of the best things about festivals is their versatility. While in the Caribbean they are often served with jerk dishes, fried escovitch or saltfish, we love to eat them in so many ways! They make a great snack on their own (perhaps washed down with a cold pint of beer or a classic Reggae Rum Punch) but festivals truly shine when paired with a fragrant Caribbean curry. Whether it’s a Curry Goat packed with turmeric and allspice, or a coconutty Trini Chicken, these dumplings are perfect for dipping and soaking up the spiced sauces. Their subtle sweetness balances the heat and richness of the curry, creating a flavour combination that’s pure magic.

At Turtle Bay, our curries are all about deep, satisfying flavours. Pairing them with a portion of freshly made festivals transforms your meal into something extra special. Think of them as a Caribbean twist on the idea of naan bread or flatbread, but with a delightful crunch.

Bringing People Together

Caribbean cuisine is all about sharing and celebrating – and festivals are no exception. When you order a batch at Turtle Bay, it’s an invitation to gather, dip, and savour the moment. They’re casual, comforting, and utterly moreish – the kind of food that turns a meal into a memory.

Next time you’re exploring the bold flavours of our Caribbean dishes, don’t forget to add a portion of these dumplings to your table. They’re the ultimate dipping companion and a perfect way to enjoy Caribbean-inspired food in a relaxed and welcoming space. After all, festivals are meant to be enjoyed – just like every visit to Turtle Bay.
